Rahim Mahmood embarked on his recruitment journey over 11 years ago, covering roles in the luxury retail space. For the last 4 years, he has made a significant mark in the maritime commercial industry.

As a Senior Consultant at Tardis Group (TG), Rahim’s deep industry knowledge, global network, and targeted headhunting expertise have been instrumental in driving growth and building trusted relationships across the region. Now as TG Singapore's newly appointed Managing Director, Rahim is determined to grow his team and take the office to new heights.

Rahim currently works with a team of 3 Consultants and hopes to grow the team over the next few months.

Ashraff Ramlan - Recruitment Consultant, Technology

Ashraff is approaching his year anniversary in recruitment, bringing with him over a decade of experience running his own retail business and working in community building and engagement. Since joining TG in September 2024, he's focused on hiring for tech roles in Singapore and has more recently been expanding into the quant industry. "It's been a rewarding journey of learning, adapting and growing."

Ashraff loves recruitment because there are so many wins to celebrate along the way, from landing an interview to navigating the excitement and nerves of the offer stage. Every step before the final placement is a milestone, and "I’m all in for the emotional ride."

His favourite thing about working with the Singapore team is that every win is celebrated, no matter what kind of week they're having. "We uplift each other when things are tough, and we cheer each other on when things go well. It's a team that truly supports and motivates one another."

Shubhi Dugar - Recruitment Consultant, Maritime and Shipping

Shubhi joined TG in May 2025 with 7 years of experience in marine recruitment, specialising in connecting skilled professionals with opportunities across the global maritime and shipping industry.

Her practical recruitment expertise combined with a Master's degree in Human Resource Management enables Shubhi to deliver customised solutions for both clients and candidates.

Shubhi loves working in recruitment because she feels that she's making a real impact. "Helping someone land a job that changes their life and supports their family is incredibly rewarding." She also loves connecting people and opportunities, saying "it's fulfilling to bridge the gap between great talent and the right companies - being the connector is powerful."

Shubhi's favourite thing about working with the Singapore team is their collaborative spirit, saying "the team is highly supportive and always willing to share knowledge and ideas, which makes working together seamless and productive." She also loves the cultural diversity and openness of the team, as "the multicultural environment fosters inclusiveness, respect, and fresh perspectives in every discussion."

Now that Rahim has taken on a new role at TG, I thought it would be a great opportunity to have a chat with him about his recruitment journey so far and his goals and aspirations for the future.

What made you decide to get into recruitment?

"Initially, being totally honest, money. Commission and competition are motivating, especially as a young recruiter just getting started. I still remember my first placement for a Retail Ops Manager. When he got the job and I saw the smile on his face upon delivering the news, the satisfaction it gave me was unmatched. The job is rewarding from a financial perspective, but seeing candidates happy after you've helped them find their dream role is another reason why recruitment is so rewarding."

What's your favourite thing about working at TG?

"The open policy TG has. The level of transparency here is 100%, open communication is not only welcomed but encouraged. Staff can go to anyone at any level because our leadership is so linear and everyone is so open."

What has been your greatest achievement at TG?

"I made a placement 2 weeks after joining TG and with a new client. I attended an annual futsal tournament in November 2024 and one of my teammates was a hiring manager. We bonded over futsal, he gave me the role and within 2 weeks I provided the best candidate in the market. I recently checked in with him and he told me it's one of his best hires, 6 months on."

What has been your biggest challenge at TG?

"Being promoted to MD, I am now responsible for 3 staff and their welfare. Not only is it now my job to ensure my team feel supported to do their jobs well and achieve targets, it is also my responsibility to establish a positive working culture and environment where they feel happy in the workplace. Getting the balance right will be the biggest challenge, but one I'm confident I can achieve with my team."

"I'm excited to grow the team and reach goals together. Each person will play a pivotal part in hitting targets and I can't wait to see what the team can achieve over the next few months."

"Work hard. No matter what industry or sector you're working in, it's all about numbers in recruitment. Show up and show commitment, even when you feel like you're getting nowhere with candidates or clients, your hard work will pay off. Recruitment is a self-motivated job, the only person who will stop you from achieving your full potential is you."

           Who’s Got The Monkey?

The Art Of Managing Your Management Time

Do you ever have a feeling that you’ve spent the entire day sorting out other people’s problems? Have you ever asked yourself the question ‘Why is it that I’m running out of time while my subordinates are running out of work?’; most likely you’ve encountered one of the fundamental problems of delegation and time management.

Try to recall a similar situation that happened to you. You’re on the way to make a cup of coffee when one of your employees stops you and says, ‘We’ve got a problem. Can I talk to you for a minute?’ You know enough about the problem and realize you should get involved but you can’t make a decision on the spot. So you say, ‘Let me think about it and I’ll get back to you.’

           Who’s got the ‘monkey’?

Do you see pitfalls in this scenario? The moment you take responsibility for the next move in order to resolve your subordinate’s problem, you start working for your subordinate. The ’next move’ is a ‘monkey’ that you’ve allowed to leap from his back onto yours. This is when the art of managing ‘monkeys’ can be handy.

The concept of Monkey Management was presented

by William Oncken Jr. and Donald L. Wass which is considered to be one of HBR’s most popular issues. The problem never gets old as most managers still spend a considerable amount of time dealing with their subordinates' problems instead of focusing on their own tasks.

How to get rid of the ‘monkey’?

Managers’ time can be divided based on 3 types of work they do:

Boss-imposed time is used to accomplish activities required by the manager’s boss.

System-imposed time is used to help out and support colleagues if requested to do so.

Self-imposed time is used to work on the manager’s own initiatives. You can use some of it the way you decide to (discretionary time), but some of it will be spent on dealing with subordinates’ problems (subordinate-imposed work).

The manager’s goal, say Oncken and Wass, is to minimize or eliminate subordinate-imposed work, get control of boss- and system-imposed work, and maximize discretionary time. The point is to have their subordinates take the initiative. When you encourage employees to handle their own ‘monkeys’, they acquire new skills - and you liberate time to do your own job. It’s initially more time consuming than tackling problems yourself but you’ll win in the long run.

           How to maintain ‘monkeys’?

Oncken and Wass conclude by citing 5 rules on how to feed and take care of monkeys:

Monkeys should be fed or shot. Otherwise, they will starve to death and the manager will waste valuable time on post-mortems or attempted resurrections.

The monkey population should be kept below the maximum number the manager has time to feed. It shouldn’t take more than 5 to 15 minutes to feed a properly maintained monkey.

Monkeys should be fed by appointment only. The manager should not have to be hunting down starving monkeys and feeding them on a catch-as-catch-can basis.

Monkeys should be fed face-to-face or by telephone, but never by email. Documentation may add to the feeding process, but it cannot take the place of feeding.

Every monkey should have an assigned next feeding time and an agreed upon resolution outcome and date. These should never be vague or indefinite.

“Get control over the timing and content of what you do,” conclude Oncken and Wass. “The result of all this is that the manager will increase his leverage, which will in turn enable him to multiply, without theoretical limit, the value of each hour that he spends in managing management time.”

When you learn how to maintain ‘monkeys’ properly you will stop viewing your people as a source of your problems and will start seeing them as a major driving force for your company’s growth.

Acing Your Video Interview!

At Tardis Group, our main focus is to put people together, the hiring manager and the potential employee.

A quality recruiter will do their best to prepare both parties prior to the interview, this comes in a variety of forms, from sharing details about prior work histories, details of personalities, sharing common interests and other such details that may assist in a better bond established during the interview.

What eventuates in the interview however, is up to the candidate and the hiring client. Sometimes it’s a perfect match, sometimes it isn’t.

Since 2020 we have seen a huge increase in video interviews, and we foresee this continuing. There are advantages and disadvantages to video meetings vs face to face. It’s important to go into a video interview in the same manner you would in a face to face meeting, with some extra hurdles you will need to consider prior to the call.

Set up your space - Have a clean, quiet background and eliminate any distractions. Ensure any family members or housemates are aware you have an interview going on at that time. Put any pets outside or in another room of the house.

Check your internet connection, camera, lighting, and sound prior to the interview. You could even run through a dress rehearsal with a friend.

Dress for success - including pants!! (You may need to stand up at some point during the interview).

Keep clear eye contact with the camera, not the reflection of yourself.

Stay focused and engaged, sit still – try not to fidget or swing on the chair.

Keep your CV and few notes in front of you for reference, however, try not to refer to them often.

Turn off all notifications and ensure your phone is on silent.

Remember to stay responsive after you wave goodbye, and until the connection is completely terminated.

As the saying goes “you don’t get a second chance to make a good first impression”. Focus on the detail, put you best foot forward and with the assistance of a good recruiter, land yourself that perfect role!

How is your resume?

         How is your resume?

Tardis have been in the recruitment world for over 30 years, placing thousands of people into roles. On every occasion, it starts with a resume.

A resume can vary significantly depending on industry and person.

Debate has ensued about just how important a resume is, some say that a client will spend no more than 15 seconds when reviewing, and generally not look past the first page.

Whether this is accurate or not, a resume is still a very important tool when entering into the world of changing jobs/careers.

Here is a list of handy pointers to consider when preparing your resume:

Review resume templates from your industry, look at general length and detail that is standard in your area.

Incorporate common keywords used in job descriptions, automation is increasing at a fast rate and keywords are becoming more and more important.

Prioritise important information, don’t waffle, avoid detail explanation of your job duties, rather focus on your key achievements.

Choose a professional layout and font.

             Optimise your skills section.

Update and include your contact information, consider making this a smaller font size to maximise space on your front page.

Customise your resume for every employer, and by this we don’t mean rewrite a new resume each time, rather look at ways you can tweak to match the clients expectations.

Update your references, keep them current.

Edit and proofread your resume, check and check again, even have a friend read over, just to be sure.

There are many variables that come into play when searching for a new job however, a well written CV will start you off on the right foot.

There are two types of people who live in this world. Firstly, the ones that love the mango seed, not afraid of being covered in the sweet sticky juice as they extract every bit of flesh. Or the ones that don’t. Perhaps, they don’t like the mess, or the fact the fibers stick in your teeth or simply they don’t like mango.

Then, as only a mango can…. It got me thinking.

Every living thing is designed with seeds. Think about it. Plants have seeds. Animals have seeds. Human beings have seeds.

           We are designed to grow.

From the moment of conception to our birth we are growing. As we race through our childhood, adolescence to adulthood there is a physical transformation of our bodies. Our minds are growing too. Like sponges soaking up every bit of knowledge, expanding exponentially, shaping our very thoughts and actions.

           Then what happens?

We reach adulthood and things begin to change. The physical transformation we experienced as we stretched and grew into our bodies slows, our age now showing through our faces.

And our minds? What happens to the sponge soaking up all knowledge?

What happens when we enter the world of work? Do we grow at the same pace we enjoyed in our youth? The acceleration of our minds shaping every opportunity that lies before us?

What stops us from this rapid growth?

           #Scared of failing

Perhaps after years of knock-backs, bruised, we learn to take smaller steps. We chose to aim just a little closer to where we are so each failure doesn’t hurt as much.

Failure is growths ultimate accelerator. Learning from our failures is the quickest path to success.

           #Comfort zone

Perhaps we are comfortable where we are in our careers. We paid the price early on, climbing high, rising through the ranks but have arrived at the optimal equilibrium of comfort.

We clog the pipeline of potential for yourself and for others. Chances are, this stagnation is robbing you of the joy you once had in your work.

           #Stuck

Maybe you have all the want in the world to grow but the space you are in doesn’t allow it. You feel trapped by the decisions you have made which has gotten you to this very point. It’s too late to transition now, the risk is too high, you are too far down this path.

Find the courage to explore new paths. Seek opportunities outside your comfort zone, develop new skills, grow your talents in new ways.

           We are designed to grow.

Then can I ask you a very personal question…. Are you growing to your full potential?

The beautiful thing is, it’s a brand-new year, brand new decade, you owe it to yourself. You owe it to your 5-year-old you, to be everything you were created to be.

I challenge you in this moment, in this time, to grow. For when you do, you begin to unlock the seeds of potential which are inside of you.

For me, it’s back to my mango.

Travelling Through Time – 30 Years Pass for Global Recruiter

          Interview with Neil MacLean

Tardis Group’s founders envisioned they’d travel through time with clients and candidates - placing good people in roles as they progressed through their careers. Thirty years on, that’s exactly what’s been happening and the Tardis name has proven to be a good fit.

‘It’s an industry of networking,’ says Founder and CEO Neil MacLean, ‘we connect with people and could place them in more junior roles and then, a few years down the track, we’re helping them make a more senior career move.

‘Likewise, we work with our clients over and over again in different positions and locations across the globe.’

The boutique human capital consultancy is continuing its strategic global expansion. It’s established in London, Sydney, Perth, Tokyo, Hong Kong and New York, Singapore, and with growing demand in Texas, it’s now set up a new office there this year.

Aged in their 20s, Neil MacLean and Jeremy Francois had been in the HR game for only a year when they ventured out on their own, launching the business in London in 1989. It was a move that would, to many, seem risky and bold.

‘People think that, but the truth is you have nothing to lose at 22… it would be much more risky if you were to do something like that mid-career or older’ says Neil.

‘We started in the basement of a friend’s wine bar and then moved to a proper office in London, Victoria, a few months later.

‘It was much more difficult to connect with people back then, we didn’t have internet and there was no email, most of our work was done by phone and fax and face-to-face meetings.

‘But what has never changed from day one is that we are about finding the best candidate for our clients.’

The business began recruiting for IT, but a niche soon became clear in the area of finance, branching into pharmaceutical, legal and commerce. The Perth office entered the Engineering space in 2019 to serve the mining industry with its unique personalised recruitment service, and the team placed their first underground worker.

‘There have been many firsts along the way, but the most rewarding part about the job is actually helping people - our clients, our candidates and our own people - that always lifts the soul.

‘But the job market is constantly evolving, in five years time we will be finding people for jobs that aren’t around today. No one knows exactly what they’ll be, but they may be in areas including robotics and artificial intelligence.

‘For example, when we started Tardis there was no such thing as Social Media, now companies are hiring Social Media Managers.

‘And these days there’s genuine emphasis placed on attaining gender and cultural diversity.’

Neil is clearly proud of his team, he says their lengthy tenures with Tardis are important to the group’s success.

‘We treat people like adults, we talk with them regularly. They really run their own mini businesses within the business, we don’t really have a culture of micro-managing,’ he said.

Scottish born Neil MacLean moved to Sydney in 2000 from London to open the Tardis office there. He’s been based in Perth since 2018 as his son, a promising soccer player, joined a soccer school program in Fremantle.

The goal moving forward into the fourth decade: ‘To continue to grow into new areas and to always provide the best available people to our clients while we see our people also grow and prosper’.

Emerging markets, a spotlight on Southeast Asia

          The landscape
is evolving for Investment Bankers working in the South-East Asian region, with
investment stretching beyond the traditional hub of Singapore into growing
markets such as Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia, with a massive focus
on sectors such as Technology, Media and Telecommunications (TMT).

          Developing
markets including Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar also are seeing increased investment
in sectors such as infrastructure, health, consumers, energy and technology,
according to Tardis’ Investment Banking and Corporate Finance Senior Consultant
Daragh Lindsay.

          For bankers
based in Singapore, this means that more transactions are taking place in these
countries, and this will continue for years to come. ‘There is a massive
investment in these locations in sectors such as infrastructure, health and
technology, and this is something which is only going to continually increase,’ Daragh
said.

          For
Investment Banks in Singapore, Technology, Media and Telecommunications (TMT)
is a sector with immense focus and investment across the South East Asia
region. Some of the main drivers of M&A and investment activity in
the South East Asia TMT sector in 2025/2026 will include infrastructure (including digital infrastructure), energy (including energy transition), technology, consumer, and healthcare. In the TMT sector, the interest in digital infrastructure is driven by the demand from cloud and AI technologies.

          ‘The
bigger banks will be increasing headcount and focus in their TMT divisions, whilst
some boutique banks and venture capital firms are now specialising purely in
TMT, rather than being generalist. Also, with the developing markets a key area
for growth, several banks will have headquarters in Singapore, but will
actually have a lot of interests and investments in locations such as Indonesia
and Vietnam for example.

          ‘This has
increased the demands for additional language skills such as Bahasa Indonesia,
Vietnamese and Thai, for example.’

‘So, while working in Singapore and communicating in English will generally suffice,
there is a real opportunity for those who can offer other regional languages
too.’

Daragh is a specialist investment banking and corporate finance recruiter for
Tardis Group, with his assignments spanning markets on both sides of Australia
and throughout Southeast Asia.

          Daragh
trained and worked as an Accountant in Ireland, specialising in restructuring
and insolvency, before his first recruitment post with Robert Walters in 2014. Daragh
originally established the professional services, accounting practice &
investment banking desk in Perth, and subsequently he found his passion within
the senior end of investment banking and corporate finance, merger & acquisitions
(M&A), business development and strategy. This is now Daragh’s speciality for
Tardis Group, senior Investment banking and corporate finance.

          ‘At
Tardis, in Australia that means finding the right people for corporate business
development and internal M&A roles in the mining and natural resources
sector, where I often find suitable candidates are from investment banking
backgrounds, so there is a strong synergy between banking candidates and
corporate roles,’ he says.

          ‘Candidates
from banks working within Natural Resources M&A divisions already have
experience working with mining and natural resources clients – so they already
understand the operations, the industry, investment processes etc, thus they possess the
skills and experience to offer in a corporate M&A role.

          ‘When the
mining and natural resources sectors are performing well, companies are looking
for investment opportunities and therefore require the suitable skills to undertake
such projects. Other mining businesses or investment banking firms are the hunting
ground for this talent.

          ‘In Singapore,
it is about finding our experienced investment bankers suitable opportunities
within banking, private equity and venture capital. For example, if a candidate in Singapore is motivated
by personal Title, they may strategically move from the ‘bulge bracket’ or
bigger banks, to a second tier or boutique bank in order to progress up the
ranks. Also, candidates may wish to work for well known or international brand,
so they may seek to leave their roles in a second tier or boutique bank, to
join a bigger bank. There is also an ever-increasing demand from candidates to
move from a traditional banking role into a buy-side, private equity, venture
capital or a corporate role. Accordingly, this is a strategic focus of mine, to
increase our client portfolio within buy-side, private equity and venture
capital.

          Daragh is
working with clients, employers and candidates across the Australian and
Southeast Asian investment banking landscape from bulge bracket banks, large
international banks, local banks, to the mid-size and boutique banks.

          For those
considering a career move, he advises that potential candidates ensure their
LinkedIn profiles are up-to-date, with their current position being clear and
accurate outlining their core responsibilities and achievements listed under
their current and recent roles. ‘This is important because head-hunters use
LinkedIn to search for talent as part of their process and potential employers
also review candidates LinkedIn profiles during the process, so it is pivotal
your skills, experience and personal brand is accurate.’ he said.

Born and raised on the Isle of Barra, a remote small Island of the West Coast of Scotland with a population of 1200, Neil MacLean moved to London in 1985 where he co-founded Tardis Group four years on. In 2000, as part of Tardis’ global expansion and ever-increasing client demands in Asia, Neil relocated to Australia where he has been based ever since.

Neil’s passion to empower the next generation of leaders in the field motivates him to create a supportive culture at Tardis that encourages curiosity, ambition, ownership and authenticity.

“We encourage and train our consultants to ask questions, and then follow that up with MORE questions, and often the last question and “one more thing” at the end of a long process of questioning ends up being the key that leads us all to the solution.”

Neil believes a healthy organisational environment is one that releases its people to own and steer their own mission. As such, Tardis offers flexibility and autonomy, allowing his global staff to work in the most effective way that brings out their unique talent and experience.

“The kinds of people who thrive within our culture are almost entrepreneurial in nature, passionate about their vision, with a strong sense of discipline and a natural people intuition.”

With the recruitment market going through technological innovation, the job market has increasingly evolved into a process that is almost robotic in nature. “Quality candidates get lost in the masses, and whilst clients are often bombarded with a high quantity of candidates, most don’t meet the specificity of the client’s mandate” says Neil, “here at Tardis, we labour to build strong personal relationships that provide targeted solutions”.

It is this culture that has allowed Tardis to become a trusted name in the recruitment industry, connecting talent to organisations that boast a stick rate of over 90%. Well established in the Finance and IT recruitment markets, Tardis continues to build a reputation for excellence globally across the Healthcare, Commerce and Legal industries.

Expanding Your Team? 4 Reasons You Want to Partner with a Recruiter

Is your company looking for high calibre team players that will not just do the job, but embody your values and mission?

With the multitudes of people applying, streamlining the quality and calibre of candidates saves you time and resources, and places you ahead of the pack. A trustworthy recruitment specialist might be the difference in finding someone who is qualified, fits your culture and takes ownership of your company’s success.

Here are four ways recruiters can be invaluable to your organisation:

           1. Specialists

Day in and day out, they are connecting with the market. Their touch points are second to none and there are at the cold face, gathering information on teams, businesses, roles.

           2. Reputation

Recruiters are relationship builders and are in it for the long hall. Their reputation is on the line and they do their due diligence to make sure they are representing you exceptional talent. They aren’t in it just for the quick wins but are in it for the long term, helping you build effective teams.

           3. Expansive Passive Network

Recruiters have deep expertise in their markets. They connect with and meet with people every day brokering information. They know what people are looking for even if they are not actively on the market. When you partner with a recruiter, you are accessing a whole new network of passive talent.

           4. Consultative

As experts, with a wide lens view , good recruiters consult and advise on not only what they see now, but what the market is saying for the future.

Are you someone looking to transition careers and not sure how to leverage your experience? Or are you thinking about exploring opportunities or just ready for a change?

Partnering with a trusted recruiter might be the difference between securing your dream job or settling.

The world of work is constantly evolving, and it can often be tedious and confusing for jobseekers to navigate its waters on their way to finding their place within it. With a plethora of different job boards and sites advertising online, it’s no wonder standing out from the crowds of applicants and organisations bidding for talent is daunting.

Here are four ways recruiters can be invaluable to YOU:

           1. Specialists

A recruitment agency’s sole job is just that – RECRUITMENT. This means all day, every day, they are focussing their resources, time and talent towards knowing the career opportunities available in their specialised industry. They have their finger on the pulse, and often have decades of relationships in the business to know exactly which companies are great to work for, and where you would fit. They see the bigger picture and are able to understand the nuances that don’t translate on paper.

           2. Trusted

Why be one of the thousands in the market out there, when you can skip the queue and have someone trusted connect you directly to companies! Recruiters make it a point to build long-standing relationships with their clients, they are trusted by companies that partner with them which places incredible weight on the recommendations they provide – giving you a leg up from the competition.

           3. Insider Knowledge

Did you know that 85% of available jobs are never advertised? This means that whilst you may be spending every waking moment trawling all the job seeking sites out there, you are only accessing the tip of the iceberg in potential options.

Recruiters work on the inside track, they have intimate insight what plans are on the horizon. Recruiters utilise their expansive network to reign in the right options for you by proactively taking your details to the market.

           4. Career Longevity

Outstanding recruiters work hard to establish a trustworthy reputation. This means, they are highly motivated to ensure an employee-employer partnership where both parties will thrive. They are looking at your career future for the long haul. Their goal is not to get you into just any old job but are passionate about working closely with both candidates and companies to ensure an excellent fit.
